Lipoedema or lymphoedema?

Two realities often confused. Understanding the difference helps you support your body better.

Lipoedema

Lipoedema is a chronic condition of fatty tissue. It mostly affects the legs, the hips and sometimes the arms, while the feet and hands are generally spared.

The volume tends to be symmetrical, painful and tender to the touch — which is what sets it apart from simple weight gain.

Signs of lipoedema

Several sensations come up often in those affected:

  • A feeling of heavy legs
  • Pain or tenderness
  • Easy bruising
  • Difficulty losing volume despite consistent effort
  • Daily discomfort
It isn't simply a question of weight.

Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema appears when lymphatic circulation becomes insufficient. Lymph builds up inside the tissues and causes swelling.

This swelling can be localised or asymmetrical, and may affect an arm, a leg, a foot or a hand. Over time, the skin can feel tighter or firmer.

Signs of lymphoedema

These signs are often noticed:

  • Persistent swelling
  • A sense of tightness
  • Heaviness
  • Fluctuations in volume
  • Marks left by clothes or socks
  • Mobility that can feel uncomfortable
Your body is asking for support, not guilt.

The essential difference

To put it simply: lipoedema is an abnormal accumulation of painful fat, while lymphoedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid.

In some cases, both can coexist in the same person. Each body then deserves an approach that adapts to and respects its own story.

The role of lymphatic drainage

In both situations, manual lymphatic drainage can support the body gently:

  • Easing the feeling of heaviness
  • Supporting lymphatic circulation
  • Improving daily comfort
  • Sustaining overall well-being
  • Complementing certain medical care plans
Regular care can help the body rediscover lightness day after day.
